It’s still bird nesting season. I hold off doing hedges until the end of August to be sure my hedge cutter does not terrify an unsuspecting bird sitting peacefully on it’s eggs deep within. Or worse…which is a criminal offence under the Wildlife and Countryside act 1981.
I check shrubs carefully before doing any individual pruning. I discovered a spotted flycatcher on its nest a few weeks ago in a viburnum, which I would not have seen if I had not carefully peered through the canopy. These birds are in the UK’s Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern. I felt lucky to find it, and I know the bird got away lucky too; definitely having me as the gardener, if I say so myself!!
Delaying hedge cutting until September is just one small thing we can do to help get this planet back on track and give a glimmer of hope for those birds in decline.
